Getting to Know Our Members: The Rooms

The St. John’s Board of Trade is a community of more than 700 members, combining the collective power of industries, sectors, and diverse perspectives. In this series, we tap into that community spirit to share experiences, support each other, and celebrate success by asking business owners three questions.

This time, we asked Anne Chafe, CEO of The Rooms, three questions to dig into what the business community might not know about
Newfoundland and Labrador’s largest public cultural space.

What’s new at The Rooms?

The Rooms re-opened to the public on March 18, 2021. Our ample space and high attention to recommended COVID-19 protocols make it an excellent choice when you’re looking for somewhere to go in the city. The Rooms is an experience the whole family can enjoy. At 90,000 square feet of space, we have lots of room at The Rooms.

Our exhibitions are constantly updated. This summer we have three new shows to discover: In The Making features Newfoundland and Labrador artists David Blackwood, Mary Pratt, and Billy Gautier; Cabinets of Curiosity will appeal to the collector in you; and the immersive art gallery exhibition In Play actually encourages you to play with the artwork.

What are three things businesses might not know about The Rooms that could be of use to them?

Tired of looking at the walls in your home office? The Rooms offers a magnificent change of scenery. Our Level 2 Atrium is fitted with tables and chairs. Get out of the house, bring your laptop, and work away. This space is free of charge and available during The Rooms opening hours.

As our province begins to re-open and restrictions are loosening, include us in your plans for future meetings in our Board Room or Theatre, or plan a reception with clients in our Café or Level 3 Atrium.

Our gift shop is stocked with locally-sourced products a perfect retirement present or gift for clients. We also have a large selection of exhibition catalogues featuring the history of our province or works of Newfoundland and Labrador artists that make excellent coffee table books.

What is the importance of culture and arts to the business community?

From STEM to STEAM – The Rooms is a place to experience the rich arts and culture of our province. The creation of art is all about discovering and developing ingenious ways of problem-solving and presenting information in new and creative ways. Interacting with art can inspire new ideas, spark creativity, and stimulate innovation – all necessary for the operation of a successful business.

Why not consider having your next business lunch at The Rooms Café with an  unparalleled view of the St. John's Harbour and delicious local cuisine? Grab a bite, then take some time to stroll through our exhibition galleries and show your out-of-town clients what makes this province so special.

We can also work with businesses to offer a customized team-building experience. And please reach out if your organization would like to take advantage of a corporate membership program that you could offer to your employees.

Cultural institutions provide context, meaning, and offer authentic experiences. The Rooms truly shows off the pride of place Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are known for.
